Small Plane Crashes on BART Tracks

Shortly after noon today a twin-engine plane crashed into a BART train yard near Whipple Road and Railroad Avenue after taking off from Hayward Executive Airport. The pilot, Robert Pursel Jr. of Fremont, was killed. Pursel was the registered owner of the plane, a Piper PA-23-150.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. According to Federal Aviation Agency spokesman Ian Gregor the pilot had planned to return to the Hayward airport. No one other than the pilot was aboard the plane, and no one on the ground was reported injured by the crash.
